There are so many dressing products available today that many clinicians and other medical professionals find themselves overwhelmed with the choices. And what about smart dressings that can serve multiple functions?
The fact is that choosing a wound dressing, just like any other specialized product, needs the help of a knowledgeable expert. That’s why the helpful staff at Sarasota Medical Products wanted to share this quick-help guide for selecting the proper wound dressing materials:
Things to Consider When Selecting a Wound Dressing
There is a lot more that goes into dressing a wound than grabbing the closest roll of cloth and wrapping an area. How the injury was caused or developed, how big it is, whether or not there is an infection, and many other things may need to be addressed and resolved first. Only after that can you decide what kind of dressing is appropriate.
When it’s time to choose the type of dressing that you will use, consider the size and depth of the wound, the frequency with which it will be changed, as well as patient-related factors such as cost and who the caregiver (for the dressing replacement) will be.
The dressing should be conformable to keep in contact with the wound bed. Additionally, you need to pack a little dead space when dressing wounds, but not too much. The frequency and thoroughness of cleaning the wound will also need to be considered.
Many times the dressing used may need to keep the wound warm as well. This is to help create an optimal moisture level within the area, preventing a moisture imbalance while also promoting healing.
At Sarasota Medical Products, we have numerous types of dressing, each manufactured to properly dress different kinds of wounds and/or injuries. To find out more, or if you have any questions about this or any other product we offer, simply give us a call at 941-377-1451.
