For many people who have to use an ostomy pouch, one of the most inconvenient and sometimes difficult chores associated with it is emptying it. There are a number of different ways that you can do this, and no one way is right or wrong. It is whatever is easiest and quickest for you, personally.
Unfortunately, a lot of people who use these devices are embarrassed to ask questions about how to properly empty them. So, your friends at Sarasota Medical Products wanted to offer these helpful tips to our readers:
- Sit down and face away from the toilet (as a female would urinate). Open the bottom of the pouch and aim it between the legs to empty it directly into the toilet. If you use a clip, fold the bottom back so that the waste doesn’t touch the entire length of the end of the pouch.
- Sit down and face the toilet (as if you’re straddling it). Open the bottom of the pouch and again, place it between your legs to dispose of the contents into the toilet. The process works the same for both clips and Velcro.
- Stand and face the toilet (as a male would urinate). Open the bottom of the pouch, emptying the contents into the toilet. Empty it slowly as there may be a bit of splash-back. Again, this works for Velcro and clips.
- Kneel on the floor and lean up against the toilet. This one may be best for when you’re at home and you know the floor and toilet are clean. Open the bottom of the pouch and aim it over the toilet, pouring it into the toilet slowly.
