It’s a terrific blessing for ostomy patients to have a wide selection of pouches and accessories to help manage and care for their stoma. Stoma paste is another small accessory, which although it doesn’t always get much attention, does a great job of making life easier. In this article, we’ll discuss what it is, why it’s effective, and show you where to find the best brands.
How Does Stoma Paste Work?
The primary purpose of stoma paste is to create an even surface around the perimeter of the stoma to attach your pouches. This is essential for mitigating leaks, and making sure everything adheres to your skin better.
It’s important to note, however, that it’s not necessarily an adhesive itself, but more of a caulking that addresses gaps and anomalies. This is an important consideration if you have scars or other deformities around the stoma site.
Through our Cymed MicroSkin series, we offer a stoma paste product that comes in tube form. You can also find stoma paste strips, but the tubed version is the most common in the medical supply market. Because of its chemical composition, it’s effective in supporting a better seal for your pouch system around the stoma.
How Do You Use Stoma Paste?
You would normally apply this to a barrier or wafer, before using it on the sensitive skin in that area. First, make sure the skin around the stoma is clean and dry since moisture of any sort will compromise the seal. As you do this, avoid using products that leave any residue.
All you then have to do is apply the stoma paste to the wafer and then directly onto the stoma, making sure not to leave gaps. If there’s extra paste left over, wash it off with water and gentle wipes. Likewise, check for gaps, which may require you to add additional paste as a remedy.
Why Stoma Paste Helps Ostomy Care
While some patients forgo stoma paste in favor of using barrier rings alone, it’s still nice to have this handy tool to address problems. Not every patient has exactly the same size stoma or skin conditions, which are what normally dictate supply needs. If you’re having trouble with leaks and pouches coming loose, then this is a very viable solution.
